Global Partnerships Social Investment Model*

The best microfinance institutions (MFIs) and cooperatives are powerful, financially sustainable channels to deliver goods and services that empower people in poverty to address the many challenges they face. However, too often these organizations lack the access to affordable capital to reach those who could truly benefit.

To reach communities most in need we have created an innovative funding model that has helped expand opportunity for hundreds of thousands of people living in poverty. Since 2005, we have formed four social investment funds designed to provide low-cost loans to a select group of socially-focused partners while providing investors with both financial and social returns. Our fund investors include foundations aiming to align assets with mission, development banks seeking catalytic impact investment opportunities and accredited individual and institutional investors.

In addition to providing investors with a fixed-income financial return, GP’s funds also deliver what we call a social return—meaning a positive impact on the lives of people living in poverty. Through our partners, we focus our investments in five impact areas that we believe are particularly effective in countering poverty: micro-entrepreneurship, health services, rural livelihoods, green technology and women’s empowerment.

Our most recent fund, Social Investment Fund 2010, is a $25 million five-year fund that will provide affordable loans to up to 25 microfinance institutions across Latin America.

Global Partnerships fund highlights include:

  • Track record: 100 percent on-time and in-full payment to investors
  • Risk management: Extensive on-the-ground due diligence and monitoring of our partners, innovative fund structure, geographic diversification
  • Impact: Deployment of more than $40 million in affordable financing to our partner MFIs and cooperatives
  • Recognition: Selected in the inaugural ImpactAssets 50, a list of leading private debt and equity fund managers that deliver social and environmental value in addition to financial returns
