ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: PRODESA, a Nicaraguan nonprofit specializing in microfinance, was founded in 1992. They serve an isolated segment of society in places beyond roads and communication systems. There are few other microfinance institutions in this region where the poorest of the poor live in Nicaragua. Agriculture is the main income source for residents in this area and accounts for 45% of PRODESA’s portfolio. Although few large businesses exist, there are more than 80,000 people with productive potential working in agriculture, small stores and service-related businesses.
