ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: ODEF formed as a nonprofit Private Development Organization in 1985. In the beginning, they provided a variety of services ranging from agricultural assistance, community development, environmental projects, healthcare and education. ODEF started its credit program in 1989, forming village banks in rural communities. In 1992 the ODEF Board decided to focus the organization on credit and sustainable agriculture. ODEF has now become one of the leading microfinance institutions in Honduras with services offered through a network of 24 branches located in the main towns and cities of northern Honduras and the Bay Islands. ODEF was the first nonprofit organization in Honduras approved by the National Banking Commission to operate as a Private Development Organization, a regulated status which allows them to create savings accounts for their borrowers and requires the highest degree of fiscal transparency.
