FAMA

PARTNER: FAMA
WEBSITE: N/A
COUNTRY: Honduras

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: FAMA began credit operations in 1990 with village banks in rural communities of Honduras and received nonprofit status in June 1993. FAMA has now become one of the largest MFIs in the country with a diverse credit strategy that includes four credit methodologies: village banks, individual loans, solidarity groups and rural credit. The rural focus of FAMA has not changed over the years, and an important part of the portfolio is still invested outside the urban centers. FAMA is one of several NGOs in Honduras that were approved by the National Banking Commission to operate as Private Development Organizations, a regulated status which allows them to create savings accounts for their borrowers and requires the highest degree of fiscal transparency.
