COUNTRY: El Salvador
ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: Apoyo Integral is a private, non-regulated corporation that acquired independent legal status in 2002, after nearly 10 years of operation as the credit arm of a nonprofit foundation, Fundación para Apoyo Integral (FUSAI). Apoyo Integral now has 17 branches in 11 of the 14 departments of El Salvador.
Since its creation in 2002, Apoyo Integral has grown strongly, increasing its portfolio by about 300% over the last four years, with consistent but modest levels of profit. Its stagnant growth in clients from 2004 to 2005 is due to high competition from other lenders and a slower transition to offering individual loans (as opposed to solidarity group loan offerings), but management has addressed this challenge and borrower numbers are expected to grow moving forward.
