ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: AMC is a private microfinance institution that started in 1996 as a credit program of ADEL Morazán, a local nonprofit organization with various social programs. The growth of the microcredit operations led to the creation of AMC as a specialized financial organization in 2001. Over the last few years, AMC has positioned itself as a strong microfinance institution in the eastern and central part of El Salvador, with a network of 13 branches. Legally AMC is a cooperative, but its founding partners and only shareholders are ADEL Morazán (99.57%), eight grassroots associations of farmers and microentrepreneurs (ADECOMYPES) (0.27%) and 12 private individuals (0.16%).
AMC’s operations are concentrated in and around cities and towns in the eastern and central parts of the country. The geographic area of influence includes the departments of San Miguel, La Unión, Usulután and Morazán in the east, and San Vicente, La Paz, Cabañas and Custlatlán in the central region.
