Success Story:
María Yuicra
Cochabamba, Bolivia

On the sidewalk just outside one of the busiest hospitals in Cochabamba, Bolivia, María Yuicra owns and runs two food kiosks for hospital staff, patients and passersby. María ran a single kiosk for about 22 years until four years ago, when she began receiving microloans from CRECER, a Global Partnerships microfinance partner. María opted for CRECER because of their savings program and interest rates, and because CRECER provides valuable trainings on health topics and business management skills. With the help of these services, María has expanded her business to include two larger stands made of steel, and tables and chairs for customers to sit and enjoy their snacks. A savvy businesswoman, María has also tailored her inventory to include the supplies needed by new mothers shortly after giving birth in the hospital—items like diapers, baby wipes and milk.

All four of María’s children have been able to attend school thanks to the income generated by her business. Outside of class hours, her two oldest daughters help with the kiosks, and one of her two sons is currently studying at the police academy to become an officer. María’s husband and father both work at the hospital itself, and the entire family lives only six blocks from the kiosks. Thus they all are able to help out with the success of María’s business—which in turn has helped improve all of their lives.
