In a region of Guatemala famous for its artisans, Diego Tohom fashions ceramic cookware, making the large pots and griddles commonly used throughout the country. He shapes them by hand and fires and glazes them at his home-based workshop. By selling to a distributor, Diego’s products reach markets throughout Guatemala as well as in neighboring countries. Diego and his family were just getting by from the sale of his cookware for many years. It was when he began receiving microloans from FONDESOL, a Global Partnerships microfinance partner, that he moved beyond a very tight family budget to being able to comfortably provide for his family’s needs. By using his loans to buy raw materials needed in his business, his production and profits have grown such that all of his children have been able to attend school and Diego has begun a second business cultivating fruit on a piece of land he purchased.
With a current loan of $1,600, Diego plans to make this one his last, as he feels his ceramics and fruit businesses are standing well enough on their own. Diego is sincerely grateful that microloans provided by FONDESOL have helped him reach this level of self sufficiency. |
