Cassandra* is a client of Fonkoze’s new health services pilot. Through this new pilot program Cassandra pays a small monthly fee to gain access to education on health topics such as family planning and nutrition, as well as access to basic screenings for conditions like malnutrition and high blood pressure.
During a basic check up, Cassandra tested with high blood sugar. After a second test to confirm her glucose levels, Cassandra was diagnosed with diabetes and referred to a local health institution for treatment and counseling. Throughout the process, Fonkoze provided Cassandra with the moral support she and her family needed to cope with the diagnosis.
Thanks to Fonkoze’s guidance and support, Cassandra was able to detect her diabetes while it was still at a manageable level, and access the health care she needed. After learning how to treat her diabetes with a healthier diet, regular exercise and proper medication, Cassandra was empowered to keep living her life and running her business of selling spices. Her diagnosis also helped to encourage her family to get screened for the illness.
With Global Partnerships’ help, Fonkoze aims to expand its health service offerings to reach all 60,000 of its microfinance clients—thus providing a sustainable way for underserved people like Cassandra to create healthier lives for themselves.
