Meet Our Keynote Speaker
Rosemary Muthomi – Co-Founder, Meru Green Horticulture
Rosemary Muthomi grew up with poor farming families on the foothills of Mt. Kenya. Determined to improve farmers’ lives, she and her husband Gerald became government agricultural advisors. But they soon realized that it wasn't enough for smallholder farmers to grow more produce; they also needed opportunities to sell it to more lucrative markets. So the Muthomi’s founded Meru Greens Horticulture in 1996 with the sole objective of organizing farmers to produce and market fruits and vegetables, both in the domestic and export markets. More recently, they founded another company – Meru Greens EPZ – which sources, processes, and exports high quality product to European buyers with the goal of enhancing the income of smallholder farmers through higher-value vegetable products.
Based in the larger Meru and Embu Districts in the eastern foot hills of Mt. Kenya, the Meru Greens enterprises provide an integrated supply chain from the grower source to various market segments and customers both domestically and globally. Ms. Muthomi believes that empowering smallholder farmers to be able to produce fruits and vegetables responsibly would spur their own development and sustainable agriculture. They employ more than 800 staff and support over 10,000 farmers.
Ms. Muthomi holds a Bachelor of Horticulture Degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She was honored in 2008 with the Entrepreneur of the Year award by TechnoServe, at the Rockefeller Foundation Gala in New York.
