Portfolio Director

Position: Portfolio Director

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Since 1994, Global Partnerships (GP) has been dedicated to its mission of expanding opportunity for people living in poverty. For the last 12 years, GP has been a pioneer in impact investing – supporting social enterprises in developing countries that deliver market-based products and services which empower people living in poverty to earn a living, provide for the basic needs of their families, and improve their lives.

Through its Funds, GP has invested more than $250 million across 17 countries, positively impacting the lives of more than 6.8 million people. It has a consistent and exceptional track record of Fund performance. GP currently invests in partners in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The GP team is comprised of 35 mission driven, dedicated, high-performing colleagues working from offices in Seattle, WA; Santa Barbara, CA; Managua, Nicaragua; and Nairobi, Kenya.

The Global Partnerships/Eleos Social Venture Fund (SVF) is an early stage impact-led fund investing in start-up businesses that expand opportunity for people living in poverty in Sub Saharan Africa. The SVF will invest in up to 12 high potential, early-stage social enterprises in sectors including education, energy, health, livelihoods, sanitation and water. The fund will support these enterprises through the “pioneer gap” via a package of seed stage convertible debt, early stage equity, and active Board engagement. The goals of the SVF are to positively impact 5+ million lives over the life of the fund and to return capital with a modest financial return to all fund investors.

The SVF is led by GP Managing Director, Jim Villanueva, who has been investing in early stage social businesses in developing countries for eight years. Jim is a leader in the impact investing space, with deep networks among accelerators, incubators, service providers and funders. He brings extensive experience as an entrepreneur and investor to his current role, providing advisory support to entrepreneurs and frequently serving on their boards of directors.
